Rules

Crews, Teams, Duos, Trios and Quads (con­densed Revised October 2009)

It is import­ant to care­fully read both rules and guidelines.

Disqualification

Failure to adhere to the rules may res­ult in dis­qual­i­fic­a­tion of the enter crew, team  or indi­vidual par­ti­cipant as appropriate.
Entry Criteria/Eligibility
  1. Crews must abide by the eli­gib­il­ity rules of the UK Hip Hop Crew Championships
  2. Entrants entered into inter­na­tional and world events are respons­ible for cer­ti­fy­ing their national eligibility.
Age Divisions
  • Open Division (International and non con­form­ing hip hop crews, no eli­gib­il­ity for World Championship)
  • Junior: Ages seven (7) to twelve (12)
  • Varsity: Ages twelve (13) to sev­en­teen (17)
  • Adult: Ages eight­een and older (18+)
  • Competition Fee
    Competition Fee all com­pet­it­ors must pay the appro­pri­ate com­pet­i­tion entry fee. All fees must be received no later than Feb 8, 2010. Competitors are allowed to per­form in more than one cat­egory or age divi­sion (see Participation Limits below); how­ever you may, depend­ing on fee paid, need to pay an addi­tional entry fee for each appear­ance. All cheques must be made pay­able to iDance.
    Number and Selection of Entrants/Crews
    The event organ­izer determ­ines the total num­ber of crews and the entry cri­teria for the com­pet­i­tion. We reserve the right to com­bine age divisions/categories for any reason, without prior notice.
    Composition of a Crew
    A crew con­sists of a min­imum five (5) to a max­imum of 8 mem­bers (8). A team con­sists of a min­imum of 9 (nine) a max­imum of 15 (fif­teen) mem­bers. Bboy crews con­sist of 3 mem­bers. The mem­bers of the crew may be made up of any com­bin­a­tion of males and females within the defined age divisions.
    Age Requirement

    A crew­mem­ber whose age falls between two age divi­sions in the com­pet­i­tion year (end­ing December 31) may com­pete in either divi­sion within that year.

    The ages for varsity crew­mem­bers are now 13–17, which dif­fers from past years when it was 12–18.  Therefore, crew­mem­bers turn­ing 13 in the com­pet­i­tion year are eli­gible to com­pete as a Junior or Varsity and crew­mem­bers turn­ing 18 in the com­pet­i­tion year are eli­gible to com­pete as a Varsity or Adult

    • Up to two mem­bers in a crew may come from a younger age divi­sion than what is allowed for the divi­sion in which they are entered.
    • Participants must be res­id­ent in the UK for at least 6 months prior to com­pet­i­tion (except open division).

    Crews par­ti­cip­at­ing in the UK Hip Hop Championship advance either from regional qual­i­fic­a­tion rounds within their own region pro­duced by idance licensees or affil­i­ates, selec­tions by idance rep­res­ent­at­ives and/or by spe­cial invit­a­tion from idance. You are expec­ted to par­ti­cip­ate in regional events in your area. In the event that there is no regional event in your area you may par­ti­cip­ate by spe­cial per­mis­sion in the UK Hip Hop Championship pre­lims only after obtain­ing per­mis­sion from idance. Regional organ­isers in the UK Hip Hop Championship may enter no more than five (5) crews in each age division.

    Competition Categories
    • Hip Hop Crews 5 — 8 Dancers, Juniors, Varsity, Adults
    • Hip Hop Teams 9 — 15 Dancers (no age division)
    • B-boy 3 on 3 Dancers (no age division)
    • Poppers 1 on 1 Battles (no age division)
    • Lockers 1 on 1 Battles (no age division)
    • Freestyle Battles 1 on 1 Juniors, Varsity and Adults
    • Duos, Trios and Quads (at the dis­cre­tion of the organ­isers — not planned for 2010)
    Participation Limit

    A crew­mem­ber may not com­pete in more than one (1) crew per age divi­sion per competition.

    Forms and Releases

    All forms must be returned to the organ­izer with the appro­pri­ate regis­tra­tion fees prior to the competition.

    Only HHI affil­i­ates can for­ward com­pleted regis­tra­tion forms and fees to HHI headquar­ters.  They will not be accep­ted if sent dir­ectly from crews or a crew stu­dio  or fam­ily representative

    Competition Floor

    The stand­ard com­pet­i­tion floor is 30’ x 30’ (9.1 meters x 9.1 meters) for all cham­pi­on­ship events. The com­pet­i­tion organ­izer may adjust the size of the per­form­ance floor and must notify all par­ti­cipants in advance of the com­pet­i­tion.  Under no cir­cum­stance will the com­pet­i­tion floor be less than 20’ deep x 30’ wide (6.1 meters x 9.1 meters).

    Attire and Props

    Attire*

    Attire may include accessor­ies such as hats, caps, gloves, scarves, jew­elry, etc.  Removing pieces of cloth­ing dur­ing the per­form­ance is per­mit­ted provided it is not offens­ive or out of char­ac­ter. Discarded cloth­ing should be placed out­side the com­pet­i­tion area and never thrown off the stage into the audi­ence. Appropriate under gar­ments must be worn by all crew­mem­bers both male and female, at all times. Clothing too short and/or too tight will be scru­tin­ized and may be deemed inap­pro­pri­ate espe­cially for over­ex­pos­ure of cer­tain areas of the body and/or age appro­pri­ate­ness. Body oils, body or face paints or other sub­stances applied to the body or cloth­ing that may affect the clean dry sur­face of the stage and the safety of fel­low com­pet­it­ors are pro­hib­ited. Crews may wear dance boots, sneak­ers or ath­letic sport shoes. All foot­wear must have clean, non-scuff soles (street shoes, dress shoes, high heels and street boots are not accept­able). Tap shoes, jazz shoes and bare feet are prohibited.

    Props

    Props that are not con­sidered an integ­ral part of a crew’s “attire” are pro­hib­ited (i.e. canes, chairs, tam­bour­ines, musical instru­ments). Kneepads or any other per­form­ing appar­atus to aid in the safety and proper exe­cu­tion of a move is allowed but con­cealed, when pos­sible, so as not to detract from the per­form­ance or the judges’ con­cen­tra­tion on the per­form­ance.  When in doubt con­tact Hip Hop International for clarification.

    Routines Length

    The routine for varsity and adult crews must be a min­imum of 1:55 and a max­imum of 2:05 from the first to the last aud­ible sound to avoid a deduc­tion in points.

    The Junior Division routine is one minute thirty seconds (1:30).  This was ori­gin­ally two minutes.

    Awards and Awards Ceremony

    The top three places in each age divi­sion and cat­egory qual­ify for the World Championships The Hip Hop crew with the highest total score will be the Grand (over­all) Prize win­ner, and will receive fin­an­cial assist­ance. Financial assist­ance will be given to the Adult Crew Winner equal to a min­imum of £1000 toward travel/accommodation and the Varsity Prize Winner equal to a min­imum of £800 toward travel/accommodation. There is no cash equi­val­ent or exchange. All decisions are final.

    Complaints
    Complaints must be made in writ­ing to idance®PO Box 234, Watford, Herts. WD17 4XJ within 7 days of the event. n the event of any dis­crep­ancy, the English ver­sion of the most cur­rent rules, as pub­lished by Hip Hop International will stand.
